Skern Adventure partners with Families in Grief to support bereaved families.

Skern Adventure marks its 50th anniversary by partnering with Families in Grief to support bereaved families.

As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we're proud to be strengthening our partnership with local charity Families in Grief (FiG) to help support bereaved children, young people and families across North Devon. In 2024, we began working with Families in Grief, a local charity that provides support to families following the death of a loved one.

Together, we started delivering outdoor activity sessions for bereaved children and teenagers, creating opportunities for them to connect with others in a fun, supportive environment. Since then, the partnership has gone from strength to strength, with families enjoying activities including surfing, climbing, ziplining, raft building and much more, all led by our instructors and supported by members of the FiG team.

This summer marks an exciting new chapter in our relationship, as Families in Grief becomes our Charity of Choice for 2026.

As part of the partnership, we'll be supporting FiG through fundraising activities, providing venues for events and helping raise awareness of the incredible work they do within our local community. We'll also be supporting Barney to Beach, FiG's annual fundraising run on Sunday 13th September, and sharing opportunities for our staff, visitors, schools and activity groups to get involved throughout the year.

At the heart of this partnership is a shared belief that every child deserves support, connection and the opportunity to thrive, especially during life's most difficult moments.

Speaking about the partnership, our Executive Director Richard Thomas said:

“Over the past year, we’ve seen first-hand the incredible work Families in Grief does to support local children and families. Outdoor adventure can be transformational for young people, helping them build resilience, confidence, and friendships, and we’re proud to support FiG as our chosen charity this summer.”

Susan Marsh from Families in Grief added:

“Our partnership with Skern has given bereaved children and families the chance to laugh, challenge themselves, and create positive memories together. Grief can feel incredibly isolating, particularly for young people, and these experiences help families reconnect and realise they are not alone. We’re incredibly grateful to Skern for their ongoing support and for choosing FiG as their charity partner this summer.”

As we mark 50 years of adventure, we're delighted to be supporting a charity that makes such a meaningful difference to families across North Devon. We look forward to raising awareness, supporting fundraising efforts and helping even more local families access the support they need.
