Field Studies in North Devon

Inspiring geography, science and environmental learning through real-world experience
At Skern Adventure, we bring your curriculum to life through hands-on field studies in one of the UK’s most diverse coastal environments. From primary discovery to A-level investigation, students work in real landscapes — collecting data, testing ideas and developing the skills they need to understand the world around them.
Set within the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, our programmes give students direct access to estuaries, surf beaches, sand dunes and rugged coastline. Students don’t just learn about geographical processes — they investigate them first-hand.
Geography in Action
At Skern Adventure, field studies focus on helping students understand real environments through structured enquiry and data collection. Outdoor activities can also be included as part of your programme, offering an additional way for students to apply their learning in the environments they are studying.
Students might investigate river characteristics while kayaking on the River Torridge, observing changes in channel shape, flow and sediment. Along the coast, surfing and bodyboarding give students a direct experience of wave energy and movement, helping them connect processes such as erosion and transportation to real conditions. Coastal traversing at Hartland allows students to explore rock structure and landscape formation up close, reinforcing their understanding of geomorphology.
When included, these experiences help bring geography to life, linking theory to real-world application in a practical and engaging way.

Primary & Secondary
We introduce students to fieldwork through hands-on exploration of real environments. From studying adaptations on rocky shores to investigating coastal landscapes at Hartland Heritage Coast, students develop an understanding of geographical processes while building confidence in observation and data collection.

A-Level
We support students in meeting the requirements of A-level fieldwork through structured investigations in real environments. From developing core fieldwork skills to collecting data for their Independent Investigation (NEA), students build confidence in analysis, interpretation and completing assessed work.
