Primary & Secondary Field Studies

Residential fieldwork for Key Stages 1–3 in North Devon
Our residential geography field studies programmes for Key Stages 1–3 introduce students to fieldwork through hands-on investigation in real environments. Based on the North Devon coast, students explore a range of fieldwork locations, from rocky shore ecosystems to the coastal landscapes of Hartland Heritage Coast, developing a clear understanding of key geographical processes.
Each field studies programme is designed around your group, supporting curriculum requirements for primary and secondary geography while allowing space for curiosity and exploration. Students are encouraged to ask questions, collect and record data, and apply their mathematical and communication skills in a meaningful fieldwork context.
Geography and Ecosystems
Our field studies courses explore the formation of coastal landscapes across North Devon, giving students the opportunity to investigate environments including rocky shores, sand dune systems and the wider marine environment. Through direct observation and enquiry, students examine how physical processes and environmental change have shaped the coastline over time, while also exploring habitats, biodiversity and ecological relationships in real-world settings.
Key geography and biology concepts, such as longshore drift and habitat zonation, can be introduced in the field or used to reinforce classroom learning. By applying theory to real environments, students test their understanding, make connections and develop a clearer insight into the geographical processes and patterns that shape the landscape.

GCSE Programmes
Courses for students aged 14–16 provide structured geography fieldwork in a range of coastal locations across North Devon. Students investigate real environments, developing their understanding of key geographical processes through practical, curriculum-linked enquiry.
Our programmes are delivered by experienced staff who provide clear guidance and support throughout, creating an environment where students feel confident to engage with fieldwork and develop their skills. Each course introduces the full fieldwork process, from setting a testable hypothesis and selecting appropriate sampling methods to collecting primary data in the field, presenting results and completing analysis, conclusions and evaluation.

Our centres
Field studies groups stay at one of our two Skern Adventure residential centres on the North Devon coast. Each offers a different setting, with access to a wide range of fieldwork locations and outdoor environments, while maintaining the same high standard of care, accommodation and support.
From coastal and estuary sites to more inland and rural landscapes, both centres provide a safe and well-equipped base for residential field studies, allowing students to learn, explore and make the most of their time in the field.
