A-Level Field Studies

Supporting NEA and advanced fieldwork skills
Our A-level field studies programmes provide students with the fieldwork experience required to support both exam preparation and their Independent Investigation (NEA). Working in real environments across North Devon, students develop their understanding of geographical processes while building confidence in data collection, analysis and enquiry.
Our tutors deliver structured support throughout the fieldwork process, guiding students as they develop research questions, select appropriate methodologies and carry out their investigations. This ensures students leave with the skills, understanding and data needed to progress confidently with their NEA and wider A-level geography studies.

Fieldwork Skills Development
Our fieldwork skills development courses give students the opportunity to learn and practise key geography fieldwork techniques in real environments across North Devon. Through hands-on experience linked to established case studies, students strengthen their subject knowledge while developing confidence in applying fieldwork methods.
This tutor-led course supports students through each stage of the investigation process, from selecting appropriate sampling strategies to using fieldwork equipment accurately in the field. Workshops also introduce the next steps beyond data collection, including the use of geographical terminology, evaluating the reliability and accuracy of results, and presenting data using appropriate methods and basic statistical techniques.
Independent Investigation (NEA)
Students can complete their A-level Independent Investigation (NEA) at Skern Adventure, with structured support throughout the fieldwork process. From pilot studies and data collection to guidance on fieldwork techniques and presentation methods, our tutors help students develop their investigations with confidence in real environments across North Devon.
Time in the field is focused on collecting primary data for individual projects, enabling students to test hypotheses and refine their research questions. Throughout the programme, students receive guidance from tutors, begin organising and presenting their data, and develop a clear plan to support completion of their NEA back at school.
All fieldwork equipment is provided, ensuring students can carry out their investigations effectively and make the most of their time in the field.

Our centres
Field studies groups stay at one of our two Skern Adventure residential centres on the North Devon coast. Each offers a different setting, with access to a wide range of fieldwork locations and outdoor environments, while maintaining the same high standard of care, accommodation and support.
From coastal and estuary sites to more inland and rural landscapes, both centres provide a safe and well-equipped base for residential field studies, allowing students to learn, explore and make the most of their time in the field.
